According to a study done by The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (www.nhtsa.gov/content/get-the-facts/facts-and- statistics.html) 95% of car accidents occur because of a distracted driver, of that 86% of the accidents occur because of drivers being distracted by their cell phones. I must admit that I have used my cell while driving more than once, but after researching for this paper I can honestly say, I will never use my cell phone while driving again, and I hope you will feel the same way. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (www.nhtsa.gov/content/get-the-facts/facts- and-statistics.html) also did a study and found that texting/talking and driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving. Most drivers don’t even realize that the cell phone is as much of a distraction as it really is. The study found that those who talk and drive are four times more likely to have an accident then drivers who do not use their phones. The study also proved that using a hands free device does not decrease the chances of having an accident because it isn’t the phone that is the distraction, it’s the conversation itself. The same report states that those who text and drive are eight times more likely to have an accident.www.nhtsa.gov/content/get-the-facts/facts-and- statistics.html) 21% of all fatal car crashes involving cell phone distractions are drivers ages 15 to 19. Teens who text while driving decreases their reaction time by 35%, and decrease their steering capabilities by 91%. Their report also   states that sending or receiving a text takes teen drivers eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the   equivalent- at 55 mph- of driving the length of an entire football field, blind. Drivers under the age of 20 have less driving experience driving, but higher numbers of texting while driving.
